A study of wood anatomy, green m.c., water absorption, shrinkage, hardness, shear strength, bending strength, compressive strength, cleavage resistance, resistance to nail withdrawal, drying schedules, working characteristics, bonding characteristics, paintability, manufacture of plywood, fibreboard and particleboard, pulping, charcoal, wood chemistry and decay resistance showed that A. japonica, A. hirsuta, A. hirsuta var. sibirica and A. firma are suitable for making furniture, tools and packaging; P. nigra X P. maximowiczii and P. koreana X P. nigra var. italica are suitable for matchsticks, packing, boxes and veneers; and S. babylonica is suitable for furniture, toys, matchsticks and wooden art objects (bentwood).
