The material analysed consisted of 209 normal and short-strawed 6-rowed barleys and 62 of the 2-rowed type, with Odesskii 31, Borwina and Plana used as standards. Among the 6-rowed types of normal straw length, material was found with a relatively high proline content under cold stress and a high degree of frost resistance. Two-rowed types accumulated less free proline and were generally less tolerant of frost.
