Study of the ecological response to mulch materials in hot pepper

Capsicum seedlings were mulched with transparent (T), black (B), or silver (S) polyethylene film, or the soil was left bare (C). The length of time that the soil temperature stayed above 30 degrees C each day decreased in the order T > B > C > S. With S, an air temperature of 36 degrees was needed to maintain the soil temperature above 30 degrees for 5 h, but with T the critical air temperature was only 28.6 degrees.
