Calluses of Saccharum officinarum varieties CP52-43, Hy5450, B4362 and C87-51 were cultured on MS medium supplemented with Heinz, Payan or Hawaiian Planter Association organic components. The Payan supplement, consisting of inositol, thiamine, 2,4-D and coconut milk, was particularly effective, giving 100% callus regeneration. Treatment of callus or explant with relatively low amounts of gamma rays (1 krad) or sodium azide (0.001%) induced considerable variation.
