One-yr-old containerized seedlings and 2-yr-old bare rooted seedlings of both species were planted in Feb. 1982 on a W.-facing 35% slope on Tin Pan Peak. The site receives <760 mm of precipitation annually. Weeds were controlled with herbicides applied before and after planting. Survival after 2 yr averaged 94% for all stock types; survival of bare rooted seedlings (98-99%) was significantly better than that of containerized seedlings (88-92%).
