Study of swelling processes in compacted black meadow soils in the Alazani Valley, Georgia, USSR, with natural and disturbed structure provided a basis for determining the type of contact between soil particles. The soils with natural structure had a transitional type of contact, whose presence predisposed to compaction. Disruption of transitional contact and the structural bonds developing on contact caused an increase by a factor of 2 in soil swelling.
