Popular as a tourist destination throughout this century, Switzerland's tourist growth began to slacken in the early 1960s and for the last 20 years there has been stagnation in the number of bednights. However, the income generated from tourism has continued to climb, with international tourism receipts growing by 71% in the ten years to 1987, which gives Switzerland the eighth largest tourism income in the world.
