Synthesis and distribution of assimilates in the green layer of the pericarp in the developing wheat caryopsis

Synthesis and distribution of assimilates in the green layer of the pericarp in the developing wheat caryopsis

Acta Phytophysiologica Sinica 15(1): 69-75

A layer of green tissue composed of inner epidermis and subepidermis of the pericarp in developing wheat caryopses was observed under light and electron microscopes. Although the green layer received only 12.5-25% of natural light, it developed chloroplasts normally. The chloroplasts had higher chlorophyll content and higher efficiency of photosynthesis than those of the flag leaf.
