Synthesis of both enantiomers of 6-methyl-3-octanone, an alarm pheromone of ants of the genus Crematogaster

A method for synthesizing enantiomerically pure (R)- and (S)-6-methyl-3-octanone by using readily available methyl hydrogen (R)-(+)-3-methylglutarate and (R)-(+)-pulegone, respectively, as the starting materials is described.
