Synthesis of esters and amides of 2,3-dimethyl-5-(substituted phenylaminocarbonyl)-6-pyrazinecarboxylic acid and their phytotoxicity

In seed germination tests, the ethyl ester and amide of 2,3-dimethyl-5-(2-methyl-5-chlorophenylaminocarbonyl)-6-pyrazine carboxylic acid (A) at 100 p.p.m. turned lettuce leaves from green to brown and turned stems semi-transparent; plants died 3 days after sowing. Both compounds killed Eleusine indica seedlings 4 days after sowing. Similar results were obtained with compound A.
