Systemic candidiasis in a Suffolk ram

, : Systemic candidiasis in a Suffolk ram. Australian Veterinary Journal 65(10): 333-335

A case of disseminated candidosis is reported in a 12-month-old Suffolk ram that underwent intensive clinical management in a veterinary hospital. The ram initially appeared somnolent and exhibited head-pressing and was treated for bacterial meningoencephalitis and/or cranial trauma. Despite intensive therapy, the ram showed minimal improvement. Yeasts were observed in urinary sediment on day 10. The ram became severely pyrexic and was killed on day 14. At necropsy, discrete, brown-yellow foci, 2-5 mm, were found scattered randomly throughout the liver, kidney, spleen and heart. Blastospores and pseudohyphae were present within the lesions and Candida albicans was isolated from them. It is concluded that systemic candidosis occurred as a complication of prolonged antibacterial and immunosuppressive therapy for the initial unknown cause of illness.
