Testing salt tolerance variability on the nutritional quality of seeds produced by rice cultivars subjected to salinity

The effect of irrigation of plants of salt tolerant and salt sensitive rice cultivars with saline water on the food reserves and germination of the harvested seeds was investigated. The yield and quality of seed and grain of salt tolerant cultivars were reduced by growth under saline conditions, but the reductions were not as great as observed in salt sensitive cultivars grown under saline conditions. It is suggested that the salt tolerant cultivars examined in this study could be used in plant breeding programmes to improve the salt tolerance of commerical cultivars without reducing yield or quality. Screening for salt tolerance in a breeding programme could be done by using the tests described in this paper.
