Cd, Pb, Zn and Cu accumulation in soils and crops following sewage sludge application was measured at 3 sites in the German Federal Republic. Heavy metals accumulated in soil Ap horizons, with little movement into subsoils, despite the highly permeable sandy soil. Zn and Cd showed greater mobility in soil, however. Accumulation of heavy metals in plants was greatest in roots, but also high in rye, barley and oat shoots and ryegrass blades.
