In 1989, in the German Democratic Republic, there were 2771 beef bull dams, of which 1549 were German Simmentals (GS), 743 improved German Beef Simmentals (GBS), 184 Limousins, 190 Charolais and the remainder Piedmonts and crossbreds. For 1862 and 933 beef cows at their 1st and 3rd calvings in 1986- 89, body weight averaged 533 and 644 kg resp, height at withers 137 and 140 cm, pelvis width 50 and 54 cm, and conformation score 5.7 and 6.3.
