The cost of a malaria control programme started on Mayotte Island in 1976 was evaluated. The annual cost in 1987 was US $6/inhabitant, half of which was spent on house spraying; this cost US $3/inhabitant exclusive of salaries. Drugs, transport, personnel and laboratory cost accounted for 30, 27, 29 and 14% of the total respectively.
