The effect of methods of rejuvenation pruning on root system development in tea bushes

The effects of the following pruning systems were compared in a 30-year-old irrigated tea garden: espalier (control); severe pruning 5-10 cm above soil level with the chopped prunings left in the alleys; severe pruning at 5-10 cm and removal of the prunings; and medium-severe pruning at 45-50 cm with the chopped prunings retained. Root growth was concentrated near the soil surface, with 75-78% of the roots in the top 40 cm.
