The endurance of the olive tree: tradition and identity in two West Bank Palestinian villages

The endurance of the olive tree: tradition and identity in two West Bank Palestinian villages

Dissertation Abstracts International, A Humanities and Social Sciences 48(11): p.2916

The continuity of tradition and the search for identity by West Bank villagers in Israel is discussed, based on research conducted in two Palestinian villages in the Ramallah area during 1980-82. The upheavals taking place in the area through the exposure to the West and despair at occupation have made more emphatic the desire to maintain tradition. Traditional institutions are given a nationalist character and are associated with Palestinian national identity.
