The influence of thinning on forest dieback. Part 2. First results of forest damage investigations in selection system trial plots of the Swiss Federal Forest Research Institute

The influence of thinning on forest dieback. Part 2. First results of forest damage investigations in selection system trial plots of the Swiss Federal Forest Research Institute

Assessments of forest dieback (by needle loss) were made in 1985 in five selection forests of silver fir/Norway spruce or fir/spruce/beech. On comparable sites, spruce and fir exhibited less needle loss (or at least no worse losses) than in high-thinned forest of the same age. This is attributed to the mutual protection of the trees in the selection forest structure. Frequent light fellings are recommended to maintain the closed structure of the selection forest.
