The paper discusses the characteristics of part time farming in England and Wales and its impact on the farm business and farm family. Full time off-farm wage or salaried employment is typical of the smallest part time holdings. Those on larger farms are much more likely to be running their own diversified enterprises on a part time basis, or doing seasonal contract work on other farms. While total household income is usually improved by part time farming, there are costs to be measured in terms of overwork and stress. The paper concludes by suggesting some training and advisory needs specific to part time farmers.
