The relation between egg weight and shell quality on poult hatching weight

For 120 eggs from turkey hens aged 6-7 months, egg weight averaged 77.36+or-7.33 g, egg sp. gr. 1.075+or-0.03, shell deformation 23.53+or-4.50 micro m, egg shape index 66.45+or-3.61, poult hatching weight 50.13+or-6.47 g and the ratio of poult weight to egg weight 64.80+or-7.10:100 vs. 80.93+or-5.99 g, 1.074+or-0.03, 22.34+or-4.40 micro m, 65.37+or-4.19, 54.65+or-4.81 g and 67.52+or-6.30:100 for 120 eggs from hens aged 8-9 months; the differences between hens of the 2 age groups were significant for egg weight, poult weight and the poult:egg weight ratio. Based on 74 eggs, the regressions of poult hatching weight on egg weight, shell deformation and poult weight + shell deformation were 0.23, 0.54 and 0.67 resp. The correlation of poult hatching weight with egg weight was 0.48. The data suggest that the equation Y = 17.72 + 0.4426 X could be used to estimate poult weight (Y) from egg weight (X).
