The relationship of coleoptile length and plant height with establishment of cereals under zero-tillage

The relationship of coleoptile length and plant height with establishment of cereals under zero-tillage

Proceedings, Annual Conference, Agronomy Society of New Zealand 17: 67-70

Seedling establishment in wheat, barley, oats and triticale in 4 zero-tilled (direct-drilled) seedbeds was positively related to the length of the coleoptile and the ultimate straw length or height of the cultivar. Coleoptile length was defined as the distance between the scutellum and the apex of the plumule as determined in seedlings sown deeply in pots. 10-25% more seedlings were established in plots of the tallest cereals compared with the shortest cereals.
