Thermology of wintering honey-bee colonies in 4-colony packs. 1. The direct effects of hive insulation on colony temperatures

American Bee Journal 129(5): 338-339

ISSN/ISBN: 0002-7626

The effect of insulation on hive and cluster temperatures in a group of 4 honeybee colonies was recorded daily. Before the hives were packed together and covered with fibreglass insulation (in early October), 3 of the colonies had areas where the temperature was 30 degrees C or higher, but in the other colony no area reached 30 degrees. Following insulation large clusters with temperatures above 30 degrees developed in all 4 colonies.
