Use of natural microbial populations: anaerobic digestion of sugarcane vinasse

Use of natural microbial populations: anaerobic digestion of sugarcane vinasse

Bulletin Agronomique Petit Bourg ( 9): 20-26

Microbial populations obtained from natural anaerobic ecosystems were tested for their ability to produce methane by fermentation of vinasse from sugarcane molasses. Selected populations were used in tests in a pilot-scale (10 msuperscript 3) reactor. The performance was satisfactory: load 14.2-20.4 kg COD m-3day-1; hydraulic retention time 3.3-2.5 days; biogas output 6.5-8.4 msuperscript 3 m-3day-1. Fermentation removed 85-97% of the BOD and 60-73% of the COD.
