Use of nitrate test rods to monitor nitrogen nutrition of winter cereals and sugarbeet

Nitrate-sensitive test rods originally developed for measuring soil nitrate content were used to estimate the nitrate content of expressed sap from cereal stems or sugarbeet petioles in the field. The results were well correlated with those obtained by the blue test using diphenylamine + sulphuric acid and recommended N rates for winter wheat and rye derived from the 2 tests were similar.
