Use of physiological and biochemical traits in producing high- protein hybrids of high-lysine maize

In order to produce high-protein hybrids, lines were selected with relatively high values for N accumulation in the above-ground biomass and for N index (ratio of grain N to biomass N). The 27 hybrids from topcrosses involving these lines were grown in the field under conditions of low N competition (20 000 plants/ha and 300 kg N/ha, of which 200 kg was given at the stage of 6-7 leaves).
