Use of polyethylene chutes for skidding during conversion of oak coppice to high forest

In a coppice stand of predominantly Quercus cerris and Q. pubescens in Londa, Italy, with an average slope of 60%, an assessment was made of the costs and productivity of using polyethylene chutes for skidding. Stems were felled, cut into 1-m lengths, skidded along the chutes, then transported to the landing and stacked. The chutes were 24-138 m long at slopes between 30 and 40%, and were constructed from sections 4 m long, 11 mm thick and 450 mm in diam.
