The use of K-4 and K-9 structure-forming polymers as mulches on light-chestnut medium clay-loam soils was studied when establishing shelterbelts in the Volgograd region of the USSR. The polymers were applied at rates of 100-200 kg/ha, and the soil m.c., structural aggregate composition, density, weediness, CO2 content, microbiological activity, nitrate content, and depth of herbicide penetration were determined.
