Use of saliva for monitoring treatment with lithium

Use of saliva for monitoring treatment with lithium

Revista de Farmacia e Bioquimica da Universidade de Sao Paulo 25(1): 71-85

In saliva and serum sampled several times from 19 patients treated with lithium carbonate and in a balanced state Li was estimated by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Intersubject analysis showed a significant positive correlation between saliva and serum values, for which ratio ranged from 1.06 to 3.39, mean 2.25. Intrasubject analysis of results for 12 patients on 5 or 6 occasions showed a high linear correlation in 8 of them and no correlation in the others.
