Use of split photoperiod for the induction of puberty in gilts

From 34 to 114 days of age, 1583 gilts were subjected to artificial light (76 lux) from 06.30 to 08.30 h and from 13. 30 to 15.30 h and to darkness at all other times (experimental group), or to artificial light (135 lux) from 06.00 to 18.00 h and to darkness from 18.00 to 06.00 h (controls), and from 114 to 284 days, experimental gilts were subjected to artificial light (112 lux) from 06.15 to 08.15 and from 13.30 to 15.30 h (112 lux), and controls were subjected to natural daylight only.
