Use of the honeybee (Apis mellifera) and of Xylocopa bariwal for pollination of Phaseolus coccineus in cages

Use of the honeybee (Apis mellifera) and of Xylocopa bariwal for pollination of Phaseolus coccineus in cages

Bulletin des Recherches Agronomiques de Gembloux 22(4): 279-284

It is known that Xylocopa is a more efficient pollinator of this crop than A. mellifera. In Colombia, X. bariwal was observed to be a frequent visitor to flowering P. coccineus; other visitors were honeybees, and also Megabombus pullatus, Pyrobombus vogti, Eulaema nigrita and Centris sp. The management, including feeding (syrup, pollen, water), of a small honeybee colony on a caged plot of P. coccineus during its 8-week flowering period is described.
