Use of tree foliages in the control of rumen protozoa

The aim of the experiment was to provide preliminary data on the use of tropical tree foliages, on the basis of their known content of phenolic substances, as a means of reducing numbers of rumen protozoa. A 50:50 mixture of rice oil polishings and sun-dried leaves of Trichanthera gigantea, Erythrina poeppigiana or Enterolobium cyclocarpum 400 g/day was given for 3 days to 3 calves (150 kg liveweight).
