The use of domestic wastewater for irrigation of fodder crops in arid areas was investigated in the Turkmen SSR. Barley, rye, rape, maize, perennial sorghum, and alfalfa were among the crops tested on grey desert soils. To achieve a year round supply of green fodder an estimated output of wastewater of 24-34 000 msuperscript 3/ha would be needed providing 1.7 t N, 0.4 t P, 0.8 t K, and 1.9 t Ca per ha. Salt accumulation in the soil was shown to occur at watertable depths <less or => 1.2 m.
