From mean liveweight 179, 227 and 319.5 kg 3 groups of 8, 5 and 2 Criollo bull calves were given diets of ground whole sugarcane plants to appetite and, during 3 successive periods, maize 0.75, 1.5 and 1.5 and protein concentrates 0.85, 0.85 and 1.2 kg. A control group was given green forage 2% of liveweight and concentrates to appetite. DM intake increased by 39, 29 and 19% in the 3 groups with increased maize in the diet.
