Using VA-mycorrhizae to enhance seedling root growth in compacted soil

Northern Journal of Applied Forestry 5(1): 65-68

In greenhouse studies, seedlings of sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua) and yellow poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera) were grown for 12 wk in pots of soil compacted to give bulk densities of 1.25, 1.40 or 1.55 t/msuperscript 3. The seedlings were transplanted to the pots at the 2-leaf stage and inoculated with Glomus macrocarpum or G. fasciculatum. Control seedlings were not inoculated. Root growth of both species was significantly reduced as bulk density increased.
