Using high growth rate of gilts for the attainment of improved performance of first litters

Using high growth rate of gilts for the attainment of improved performance of first litters

Tierzucht 43(12): 593-594

Recent work carried out in the German Democratic Republic on the effect of body weight and age at 1st insemination of gilts on farrowing rate and litter size is discussed. At the Kolsa pig breeding station, in 1988, body weight and age at 1st insemination of breeding gilts averaged 101 kg and 182 days resp., daily gain averaged 554 g, CR to 1st insemination 85.4%, litter size 10.2 and the number of liveborn piglets per litter 9.7.
