Using molecular biology to improve the accuracy of selection

In this review, consideration is given to the detection of associations between marker genes (characterised by molecular techniques) and quantitative trait loci, when the marker genes and quantitative trait loci are in linkage disequilibrium or in joint equilibrium. The application of marker genes in breeding programmes for dairy cattle are discussed in relation to the hsuperscript 2 of traits, age at which animals are selected, and the additional accuracy that may result.
