A study of fertilizer N uptake and balance in plant cane on a compacted red ferrallitic soil using 15N

In trials with the sugarcane cultivar C.187-68, cane planted in Nov. 1981 received urea at 120 kg N/ha in Dec. + PK basal dressing applied at planting. The availability coefficient of fertilizer N was assessed 8 months after application and N losses through leaching and the amount of N remaining in the soil were assessed at harvest (Feb. 1983). The availability coefficient was 33% of the amount applied, with 52% of 15N being absorbed by the adjacent plants.
