Active leaf area in wheat varieties of different types and leaf area relation to grain yield

The leaf area of the 2 upper leaves, LAI and grain yield were determined in 27 environments in 8 winter wheat and 4 spring wheat cultivars. Winter wheat Maris Marksman and spring wheat Jara had the largest leaves and Maris Marksman had the highest LAI (2.28) and grain yield (6.98 t/ha). Grain yield was positively correlated with LAI but Vala, Kosutka and Rena which were small leaved with lower LAI produced high grain yields from dense closed stands and were better adapted to drought.
