Age and seasonal variation of litterfall and nutrient contents of Cryptomeria japonica

Quarterly Journal of The Experimental Forest of National Taiwan University 3(1): 1-20

Litterfall was recorded in Cryptomeria japonica plantations aged 12, 17, 23, 32, 50 and 71 yr. Concentrations of N, P, K, Ca and Mg were analysed and use efficiencies of N, P and Ca were calculated. All except the 12-yr-old plantation showed peaks in litterfall in March-April and July-September. Annual quantities of litter produced were 472.4-2299.8 kg/ha, increasing with age. Concentrations of N, P and Mg increased in the growing season and decreased during dormancy.
