Apple scab (Venturia inaequalis): histological studies on fruits of resistant and susceptible varieties

Apple scab (Venturia inaequalis): histological studies on fruits of resistant and susceptible varieties

Mitteilungen Klosterneuburg, Rebe und Wein, Obstbau und Fruchteverwertung 40(5): 223-230

Histological studies were performed on the cultivars Golden Delicious, Gloster, Boskoop and Brettacher, with various degrees of susceptibility, and on the resistant Prima and wild apple Malus floribunda. Susceptible varieties exhibited a wrinkled cuticular surface of the fruits in the first few weeks after anthesis, which was absent from resistant genotypes. The wrinkling was thought to retain moisture more easily than the smooth surfaces of resistant forms and thereby favour infection.
