Application of microorganisms in coal cleaning processes

Application of microorganisms in coal cleaning processes

Biotechnology for energy Proceedings of International Symposium on Biotechnology for Energy, Faisalabad, Pakistan, 16-21 December 1989: 379-403

Various aspects of coal bioprocessing, including desulfurization and depyritization are reviewed. Bituminous coals varying in total sulfur contents of 3-6% were depyritized > 90% by mesophilic acidophiles like Thiobacillus ferrooxidans and T. thiooxidans and thermophilic Sulfolobus brierleyi. The archaebacterium, S. brierleyi desulfurized inorganic and organic sulfur components of the coal. Conditions were established under which it can remove > 30% of the organic sulfur present in the coals.
