Baculovirus enhancing proteins and their implication for insect control
The biological and molecular characteristics of a virulence gene product known as viral enhancing factor, which can enhance insect larval infections 25-fold, are described. It is suggested that the viral enhancing factor present in Trichoplusia ni granulosis virus granulin alters the structure of the peritrophic membrane by degrading glycoproteins, so increasing permeability to virus particles, and that viral enhancing factor protein can bind to the plasma membrane of insect cells.
