In field trials in 1989-90, rice seedlings were given band applications of 500-610 kg/ha of slow release NPK fertilizer during machine transplanting or conventional applications of 320 kg/ha from 20 d after transplanting. Band application increased the number of tillers/hill and slightly increased grain yields. Grain quality was decreased by increasing basal fertilizer rates and with N application at panicle initiation.
