Irrigation experiments conducted over 9 years (1980-88) in intensively grown olives in central Tunisia are described. Brackish water (containing 4 g salt/litre) is pumped at the rate of 50 litres/s from a 20-m-deep drilling. Tolerance of salinity was demonstrated by the olive trees, which had an average annual yield of 3.5 t/ha; 13 local and introduced cultivars of table and oil olives were involved in the study.
