Aspergillus flavus, A. niger and Paecilomyces sp. were found to be responsible for the biodeterioration of leather. The process was facilitated by the interaction of leather components, such as proteins and lipids which serve as substrates for the induction and activity of such fungal enzymes as acidic, alkaline and neutral proteases, isocitrate lyase, FDP aldolase, glycerol dehydrogenase, etc., leading to microbial growth and proliferation and hence deterioration.
