Biochemical profile of goats during experimental chronic hypocalcaemia - an animal model study

Hypocalcaemia was induced in 5 goats by daily i.v. administration of EDTA over 90 days. Blood and urine samples were collected at 6 day intervals from these animals and 5 normal goats. Two animals died on day 84 and 2 on day 90, immediately following infusion of EDTA. It was concluded that the deaths were due to exhaustion of mobilizable Ca from bone reserves. Significant decreases in serum Ca and P began on day 12 and 18 respectively, with a total reduction of almost 60% by day 90.
