Bovine leptospirosis in cattle in Portugal: bacteriological and serological findings

Bovine leptospirosis in cattle in Portugal: bacteriological and serological findings

Veterinary Record 128(23): 549-550

Between May 1986 and July 1989, 751 cattle slaughtered at the Lisbon Industrial Abattoir were surveyed for leptospirosis. 80% of the cattle were less than 2 years old and 62% were males; they came from Ribatejo e Oeste (381 cattle), Alentejo (278 cattle) and an island in the Azores (52 cattle). Three isolates were recovered from the 237 kidney samples collected from the cattle and processed; they were all identified as Leptospira interrogans serovar hardjo type hardjo-bovis.
