An account is given of work on breeding melon, watermelon and Cucurbita varieties for the lower Povolzh'e (Volga Lands) region of European Russia. An evaluation was made of ~6000 varieties and >2000 hybrids from 18 countries and 32 provinces of the USSR. Intervarietal, interspecific and complex stepwise hybridization involving several varieties was used, together with backcrossing, inbreeding and individual selection.
