Breeding interspecific potato hybrids resistant to viral infections

In 1984-86, interspecific hybrids were obtained from crosses between Solanum andigenum (S. tuberosum subsp. andigena), S. phureja, S. acaule, S. demissum and S. bulbocastanum and examined for resistance to viral diseases. Both Soviet and foreign S. tuberosum cultivars were used in backcrosses. A scoring system was developed to evaluate infection with viruses S, X, Y, L and M, potato spindle tuber viroid and late blight (Phytophthora infestans).
