Changes in the nutritive value of forage during hay curing: the case of permanent meadows in the northern French Alps

Changes in the nutritive value of forage during hay curing: the case of permanent meadows in the northern French Alps

Soil grassland animal relationships Proceedings of 13th general meeting of the European Grassland Federation Banska Bystrica Czechoslovakia June 25-29, 1990, 2: 249-252

In permanent hay meadows in the N. French Alps, herbage samples were collected from 55 cutting operations, 2-3 times/d during drying in the field. Swards studied ranged from those rich in forbs (Geranium sylvaticum, Anthriscus sylvestris and Rumex obtusifolius) to those rich in fine-leaved grasses (Festuca rubra and Agrostis tenuis. Hay cut in fine weather and fully dried on the field contained on average 11 g crude protein and 4% OM digestibility/kg DM less than that of fresh herbage.
